Grotten van Valkenburg
Te midden van een schitterende natuur ligt Valkenburg aan de Geul. De 1ste vermelding van de naam (Oud-Valkenburg) stamt uit 1041. Omstreeks de 12e eeuw werd het Kasteel van Valkenburg gebouwd (Nederlands enige hoogteburcht), de huidige Kasteelruïne. De aansluitende stadsomwalling bestaat uit de 14e eeuw. De mergelsteen waarmee het kasteel, de vestingwerken en vrijwel alle andere gebouwen gebouwd werden, werd rechtstreeks gewonnen in de ondergrond waarop de gebouwen gerealiseerd
werden. Hierdoor is in Valkenburg zo’n 250 km aan gangenstelsel ontstaan.
Er zijn echter ook diverse van deze stelsels waar u als bezoeker een keur aan activiteiten kunt beleven. Rondleidingen, sportieve activiteiten, creatieve workshops, spooktochten. Het is maar een greep uit de vele mogelijkheden.
Naast het beheer en behoud van alle bestaande activiteiten worden er ook jaarlijks diverse themadagen in en rondom de grotten georganiseerd. Oktober mergelmaand en het ondergronds kerkenpad zijn hier succesvolle voorbeelden van.
